Important
If you are planning to travel then don’t leave your request to late.
Request at least 5 days before travel so that you are able to get your medication. Sometimes the pharmacy may be out of stock or closed. Please note that NHS rules state that only a 3 month supply of medication can be issued for travel abroad. If you require medication for a longer period of time then this can be issued on a private prescription, standard NHS prescription charges would then not apply.
Urgent Repeat Prescription Policy
Due to the increasing numbers of patients requesting their prescription on an urgent basis, the practice has needed to instate an ‘Urgent repeat prescription policy’. Unless a medication is urgent to prevent immediate harm, all prescriptions will be processed as if requested routinely. These will be submitted to the GP’s and processed within 2 to 3 working days. Please note that pharmacies are able to issue an emergency supply of most drugs without a prescription.
The following medication will be issued on an urgent basis due to the clinical nature of them:
- Inhalers and Montelukast
- Medication for epilepsy
- Warfarin , Apixaban, Rivaroxaban, Dabigatran, Edoxaban, heparin
- Palliative care medication
- Digoxin, Beta blocker (only if for heart problems)
- Anti-psychotics
- Lithium
- Epipens/Jext pens/Emerade
- Insulin and Gliclazide
- Glyceryl Trinitrate spray and Isosorbide Mononitrate
- Prednisolone and Dexamethasone
- Azathioprine, Methotrexate and Sulfasalazine
Emergency prescription requests are not requests for medication which has been ordered late. You should allow 48 hours for routine repeat prescription requests.
Non-Emergency Medications
The following list shows examples of categories of medicines which are NOT regarded as emergency and current medical opinion is that you will NOT suffer harm if you are without them for 72hrs:
- Skin creams for eczema /psoriasis/acne /dry skin
- Tablets for high cholesterol

If you are dropping off a treatment advice letter from your hospital appointment the consultant you have seen is aware that this is a request for the practice to action within one week of you contacting the surgery. However the practice will endeavour to issue the prescription within 3 working days. If it was more urgent for you to commence, a prescriptions would have been provided during your hospital appointment.
Medication Queries
Please get in touch with the surgery to raise a query about your medication.
Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
When going abroad you can take your NHS medications with you.
Please visit the NHS website for the latest Prescription Charges
These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.
